Hay perustettiin vuonna 2002, ja sen huonekalumallisto lanseerattiin Imm Köln -messuilla vuonna 2003. Hayn tavoitteena oli kannustaa tanskalaista huonekalumuotoilua palaamaan 1950- ja 1960-lukujen innovatiiviseen kulta-aikaan, mutta nykyaikaan sopivassa kontekstissa.
